More than 200 historic photographs of the Columbia Gorge spanning a 90-year period went on exhibit at the Portland Art Museum last weekend. "Wild Beauty" includes the earliest images ever taken of the Gorge by Carleton Watkins in 1867, as well as prints by legendary early landscape photographers Benjamin Gifford, William Henry Jackson, Frank Haynes, and Lily White through the turn of the century. The photographs span the periods of road and railroad building, as well as construction of the big dams in the 1930s and 40s. Several special lectures are being held in conjunction with the exhibit, including one on how photography shaped the American West on Oct. 21 at 6pm, and one on the art of landscape photography on Sunday Nov. 2 at 2pm. Anyone interested in carpooling up to see either program can contact rbergeman@proaxis.com. The exhibit runs through Jan. 11

The PhotoArts Guild will honor the role of fellowship in the advancement of photography with a invitational juried exhibit at the Corvallis Arts Center in April and May of 2009. Members of our guild are invited to participate, along with members of the four oldest fine art photography groups in the state—the PhotoZone Gallery in Eugene, the Portland PhotoForum, the Inner Light Society and the Interim Group. All of these groups have been in existence for more than 20 years (the PAG is the youngest, having turned 20 this year). Phil Harris, a nationally known photographer and artist who is currently an administrator and teacher at the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts, as agreed to be the juror. PAG members can submit up to four images each (in jpg format) for consideration. Although your deadline isn't until Jan. 5, it's not too soon to start thinking of what four images you want to represent you.

The PhotoArts Guild was originally formed by five photographers in 1988 who wanted a forum for feedback and critique to encourage their growth as image makers. It became affiliated with the Corvallis Art Center in the early 1990s and currently has over 30 members. For information on the PAG's goals and membership, click 'more'
