In March of 1856 the slopes of Eight Dollar Mountain across the Deer Creek Valley were alive with a running fire-fight between Chief John’s band and about 100 local militia from Fort Hay, a fortified cabin located north of here. The two sides traded fire for hours along a line that grew to a quarter-mile long before both sides broke off with a few casualties.
